I am planning an article entitled "Doing Sociological Theory: Reclaiming a Scientific Theoretical Sociology." This article will start with a critique of the current state of social/sociological theory, most of which has become disengaged from science, and then move on to show how we need to bring theory and empirical research much closer together. The article will outline about six research programs in sociology that have proved highly successful empirically and review a sample of the studies that have been carried out under the aegis of each program. Some research programs to be discussed include rational choice and religion, state-centered theories of contentious politics, and split labor market theory.
